HIghway of Heroes: July 9, 2009

Something quite different today.

Yesterday, as I was on the 401 just east of Toronto, a radio announcer advised that the 2 Canadian soldiers killed this week in a helicopter crash were on the west bound lane having recently landed at Trenton airbase.

I started to watch for their entourage.

I must confess, that to that point I had not given the Highway of Heroes much thought. Like most Canadians I was saddened everytime I heard of a soldier's death and thought of their family and love-ones. But driving along the 401 at this juncture, it brought it all home to me.

As I progressed along I noticed all the people waving flags at each overhead in anticipation of these brave men driving by. With them were firetrucks, rescue vehicles, police cars and such. It really was quite impressive and they all waited their turn to salute these fallen comrades.

I thought of the two "boys" and how they must have felt going over seas for the first time. Probably convinced that they would return okay but in the back of their minds thinking that maybe - just maybe - they would incur a serious injury or death. I thought of the worry for their parents on their departure and during all the time they were over in Afganistan. It would be hard to take but not as hard as seeing their worst fears come to pass.

I thought back to my father Robert Ralph who fought in Italy and Holland during 1943-45 and wondered if the same thoughts haunted him during those momentous years in his life. I thought of his parents and how they too had to cope with the knowledge that they were but a telegram away from ever seeing their only son again.

And then in the distance I saw the flashing lights announcing the approach of their last caravan. Police cars and police motorcycles and then the 2 hearses, which I slowed down to salute. It was over in but a few seconds but the memory will remain with me until I too die.

God bless those "boys" and all who fight for freedom in our names. We all owe them so much more than we'll ever know.

Tim Hudak, new Ontario Conservative Leader

I was going to write this morning about the perils of Sarah Palin but came across an interesting editorial concerning the recently appointed Leader of Ontario's Conservative Party (we'll ignore the Progressive in its name).

This article by Adam Daifallah quite correctly views this development as a turning point for the Conservative Party and our Province - yes I live here in Ontario and more specifically, in Ottawa, -Canada's capital.

Daifallah rightfully points out that recent leaders of the Party have been "unmitigated disasters" in that they failed miserably in providing the voters of Ontario with a viable conservative alternative.

Heretofore, the Conservative Party has attempted to woo the voter with a different shade of pink. With the result being, for the first time in its history, Ontario has descended into have-not status. Meaning its annual expenditures far exceed its annual revenues. Rather like the California of the north with the exception being the Liberal Party in control continues to fail to recognize its implications.

For conservatives like myself, the worry remains that a lot can slip between the cup and the lips. Meaning, it is one thing to promote Conservative values when in opposition, it is another to act upon them if and when elected. In recent history the latter has been the way it has turned out whether you are speaking about George W. Bush or Stephen Joseph Harper.

One important reason for this is that more and more citizens have less and less stake in the State's well-being. More on this later....

Intro

In the time I have been on this earth I have seen many changes; some for the better, most for the worse.

We have gone from a time when family and neighbours cared for one another and were interested in their surroundings, to a time today when too often individuals are out for themselves and where apathy has to a large extent set in.

We find ourselves now with our country men and women split between those who have turned on and tuned out and those who are still trying to hold on to the values handed down to them from past generations. The former, if they can be classified at all, can be described as liberals, the latter, conservatives.

Our governments have degenerated into different shades of liberalism - Republicans are virtually indestinguishable from Democrats and it is the same with Conservatives vis a vis Liberals.

Unless the True Conservative gets involved and assumes the agenda, I believe we are all headed toward an inglorious fate.

More on that later.
