GUILTY AS CHARGED.

NOT BLOODY LIKELY.

OUR ESTEEMED PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT, THE PROVINCE'S WORST IN OUR 150 YEAR HISTORY, FINDS ITSELF IN COURT THIS WEEK AND NEXT ...IN FACT IN TWO SEPARATE COURTS... AS DEFENDANTS.

NEXT WEEK WILL SEE SENIOR FOLKS IN THE PREMIER'S OFFICE FACING CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR DESTROYING SENSITIVE EMAILS. I KNOW, I KNOW 'WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL, ISN'T THAT WHAT DEAR HILLARY DID WITH IMPUNITY?'

BUT MORE ON THAT CASE LATER, TODAY I WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON THE CASE THAT BEGAN EARLIER THIS WEEK WHERE THE PREMIER'S FORMER DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF, PAT SORBARA, PLUS ANOTHER SENIOR PARTY OFFICIAL, ARE ACCUSED OF BRIBERY UNDER THE ELECTIONS ACT:

The Act's Bribery Section states that 'no person shall directly or indirectly give, procure or promise or agree to procure an office or employment to induce a person to become a candidate, refrain from becoming a candidate or withdraw his or her candidacy.'

'A conviction carries a penalty of up to $5,000 but if a judge finds it was broken "knowingly," the penalty is a fine of up to $25,000 and/or up to two years less a day in jail.'

HERE BRIEFLY ARE THE RELEVANT FACTS:

In the last general provincial election the Liberal Candidate, Andrew Olivier lost the Sudbury Riding to a Socialist Party Rival by a tad less than a thousand votes.  Up till then, the Liberals had held that seat for approx. 20 years.  In a bizarre move, the victorious socialist unexpectedly quit 5 months into his new gig citing the usual health and family reasons thereby opening the riding up for a by-election that Olivier naturally hoped he'd win.

It soon though was made clear to Olivier that the Premier did not want him to run again and that they had another in mind to carry the Party's Banner.

But it was still left open that a nomination meeting might take place and Olivier naturally still harboured hope that he might eventually win out.

It was at this point that Sorbara et al offered jobs/positions to Olivier on condition that he walk silently away into the night. Olivier was astute enough to have taped these offers.

This would accomplish two things, it would clear the way for the Premier's favourite and it would help heal any expected split with the Olivier supporters in the Riding should their guy be callously cast aside.

                                          ----------------

Seems like an open and shut case of Bribery to me...remember the words of the section:  No person shall directly or indirectly give, procure or promise or agree to procure an office or employment to induce a person to become a candidate, refrain from becoming a candidate ...

And although the Premier has the power to hand-pick her candidate, she did not officially make that decision and until she did, any Riding Liberal - including Olivier could still expect to compete.  In fact, in his own testimony this week that is exactly what he testified to...that is to say, he was 'still hoping that the Premier would not designate her favourite and that he (Olivier) would still be given an opportunity to run'.

The defendants lawyers ...no fools they argued that Olivier was never a candidate for the Byelection and that even Oliver knew that it was never likely he'd be given the Premier's preference.

I would not be the least surprised if the Court buys this defence since it certainly defied belief when it found The Duffy not guilty on over 30 criminal charges. See my recent Blog.

So you play Judge here, what would you decide???

As a post-script, as a long time politico I know full well that these types of negotiations go on as unseemly as it may seem to many of you.  What makes this case different is the fact that Andrew Olivier had the presence of mind to tape his conversations with the two defendants.

With the wide usage of IPHONES one can expect future such discussions will be much more cautiously delivered.

WE HAVE DECIDED TO SELL OUR CONDO

Condo living is all the rage of late and Anne and I got caught up in this growing trend but we kept our 1 1/2 Story Bungalow. So with 2 properties to manage ...double realty taxes, repairs and insurance and such it has gotten just too much for us so we have reluctantly but nonetheless quickly come to the conclusion that we best sell our beloved Condo.

It's a good size for a Condo - 1650 sq ft and is ground level so it has its own gardens, patio etc.  It also has new appliances, mostly new furnishings, as well as a year old heating and air-conditioning system.  We'll miss it but it will be a super buy for you since we are motivated.

If you get the chance, please drive by it and if you like it, be sure to quickly give us a call.

Hold on a minute, I have a call coming in:

"Boy your condo sounds great before we talk price the Mrs. and I would like to take a drive by it...Where exactly is it Galagher?"

Good question, 'Using the Sarasota / Bradenton Florida Airport as your reference point, drive 11.5 miles north toward Bradenton and turn left at ...'

'Hello, Hello, ...I guess he hung up'.

Any way don't you waste any time getting there it is not likely to last.

As we see it...

THE PENNY DROPPED.

Which is now somewhat ironic since our country Canada no longer mints the tiny coin.

But back to the Dropped Penny analogy.

Canada is a member of NATO but we are hardly a member in good standing since we contribute less than half of our annual allotment (less than 1% of GDP compared to the required 2%). Thus it is not surprising that our equipment for all our branches of the military are quickly becoming outdated.  For instance, we are still flying the woefully outdated Sea King Helicopters which past their best before date in the early 1980s.

But my story today involves our outdated CF18 Jet Fighters that date back to the 1970s and which too are in desperate need of replacement. NATO favours replacement by Lockheed Martin's F35 Joint Striker Jet and NATO countries, save for Canada, are following suit since military experts say the Joint Striker Jet is far superior to its competitors and due to the fact that it is critical for NATO pilots to operate from a comparable platform.

So what is Canada going alone on and more to the point ..why?

Canada has decided to purchase between 25 and 30 Boeing F/A Super Hornets and is calling it an 'interim step' to give it more time to consider a permanent solution.

But our country has never adequately answered the Why in all of this.  Why purchase up to 30 jets, at a cost of over $2 Billion Dollars, even as an interim step, when it is not recommended by NATO?

It never made any sense to me until just the other day...when the proverbial penny fell.  I was reading an article that Boeing, the manufacturer of the Super Hornet, is in the process of bringing a trade dispute against Bombardier, Canada's golden hair Quebec Manufacturer of civilian aircraft and railway transportation products.

Boeing was bringing action against Bombardier for unfair and aggressive trade practices and in particular for 'dumping' passenger jets in the United States below cost.

Canada's Prime Minister, the one and only Justin Trudeau, struck back saying that in light of Boeing's action, "Canada is reviewing current military procurement that relates to Boeing".  In other words, Trudeau was threatening to withdraw from the agreement to purchase Boeing's Super Hornets.

Could this be the answer why Canada was entering into its interim step to purchase Boeing's Jets in the first place?

Moreover does it have something to do with Bombardier consistently coming out on top when it comes corporate welfare payments from Canada's Federal Government and from its home province of Quebec?

Indeed, over the years billions of taxpayers' money have been spent to support this poorly managed entity.  Earlier this year the Feds provided the company with and interest free loan in the sum of $283 million which followed a $1 Billion Dollar Bailout from the Province of Quebec.

It appears that no cost is too great to support Bombardier, and I leave it to you to determine if that also includes the purchase of a bunch of unneeded Jets.

LIKE THE UNITED STATES, CANADA HAS A SENATE...

UNLIKE THE UNITED STATES, CANADA'S SENATE IS AN UN-ELECTED, UNACCOUNTABLE BODY FILLED WITH HACKS, FLACKS AND NE'ER DO WELLS.

OUR SENATE IS THE ENVY OF SUCH STERLING TOTALITARIAN COUNTRIES AS RED CHINA.

AND TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, OUR SENATE HAS EVEN MORE SENATORS (105) THAN DOES THE U.S. SENATE (100) DESPITE THE FACT THAT OUR COUNTRY IS BUT 10% OF ITS SIZE.

OKAY GALAGHER...'SO JUST HOW BAD IS YOUR SENATE?'

GLAD YOU ASKED.

AND TO DO THAT, WE'LL LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE CASE OF THE MOST RECENT HONOURABLE SENATOR TO FIND HIMSELF ON THE FRONT PAGES OF THE NEWS...

MICHAEL DENNIS DUFFY KNOWN TO ALL AND SUNDRY SIMPLY AS 'DUFFY'.

In his maiden Senate Speech he began by saying he had not sought the honour of being named a Canadian Senator ...rather it had been thrust upon him.  This despite the fact that everyone who knows
Duffy knew that he had lobbied long and hard for this appointment for over many decades.  As an aside, He would have made an excellent politician given my belief that you can believe whatever a politician tells you up to the time their lips begin to move.

Duffy did not waste any time making a name for himself by quickly becoming the subject of 31 Criminal Charges for Bribery, Fraud and Breach of Trust all related to his new role as a Canadian Senator.  Eventually and in my opinion amazingly, he was found not guilty on all charges though it is widely held that his actions were deemed to be those of a totally morally bankrupt individual.

He was able to return to his cushy sinecure and reimbursed retroactively for his pay and benefits.

(Below you will find an article by one of Canada's best Columnists, Andrew Coyne who expertly and better than me sets out for you, in some detail, the shenanigans The Duffy was up to in the lead up to his 31 Criminal Charges:

Andrew Coyne:

What is $8 million, after all when one considers the 'cruel and unusual punishment' to which, according to his statement of claim, Duffy was subjected.

“If this action succeeds in bringing Charter protections to all who work on Parliament Hill, this will be my greatest contribution to public life.”
— Senator Mike Duffy

Well I think we can all agree on that. And let there be no doubt: in suing the Senate of Canada and the Attorney General of Canada for $6.5 million in general damages, $1 million in punitive damages, and $300,000 in lost income, in addition to unspecified amounts in special damages, interest, and costs, the Senator from Wherever I Designate is not fighting for yet another great wad of dough from the taxpayer, in compensation for having been deprived of great wads of dough from the taxpayer when the Senate suspended him for taking great wads of dough from the taxpayer.

No, he is fighting for you and me. Well, you and me, if we were appointed to the Senate of Canada. After his spectacular 2016 acquittal on charges of fraud, bribery and breach of trust, he is fighting for the rights we all enjoy: the right to be presumed innocent by a credulous judge, the right to a strangely inert Crown prosecutor (who failed to ask him, among other omissions, about the famous $90,000 cheque from Nigel Wright), and most of all, the right to claim tens of thousands from the public purse for personal trainers, “emergency” makeup artists, and travel of all kinds — notably “travel” to the Ottawa house he had lived in for 38 years — on the grounds that the rules did not specifically prohibit it.

Sure, the “experts” say his chances are slim. Sure, the road ahead seems long and hard. But if it saves even one life appointee …

What is $8 million, after all — roughly 80 per cent of what Omar Khadr (my italics - A convicted Islamic Terrorist) received for being imprisoned as a teenager and tortured for days on end — when one considers the “cruel and unusual punishment” to which, according to his statement of claim, Duffy was subjected, not to mention the deprivation of his right to “life, liberty and security of the person.” In case there is any confusion: both are references not to imprisonment or torture, but to the Senate decision to suspend him without pay he made as a senator. Well, he did, repeatedly, under both Liberal and Conservative governments, but the point remains: there but for a sense of shame go all of us. Each day as he takes his seat in the Senate he must relive the moment he was temporarily deprived of this basic right of citizenship, a six-figure sinecure until the age of 75, so long sought and so hard won. Not to mention the cost to his reputation, unblemished until then by even a hint of propriety.

And what is even that trauma compared to what he endured earlier, behind the scenes: blackmailed into accepting the $90,000, with the threat that if he did not take the money he had repeatedly demanded he would not get it.* For months he was obliged to remain silent while the most senior figures in the Conservative government furiously attempted to whiten his good name: rewriting a Senate committee report, attempting to tamper with an outside audit, pretending to the public that Duffy had repaid his expenses himself, all with a view to avoiding any suggestion that he had knowingly done wrong. To this day he must live with the stigma of being forced to publicly acknowledge he “may have made a mistake” in claiming his unwinterized cottage in PEI as his principal residence, though to date he has been spared the stigma of having to repay any of it.
This is a moment for all Canadians to reflect. What has happened to us? What have we become that we should so cruelly mistreat this dedicated public servant? Not since Brian Mulroney was forced to pay taxes years late on the $300,000 in cash he had secretly taken from an international arms dealer and lied about under oath has there been such a travesty of justice.

As Duffy says, this is not about Duffy. Rather, it raises “questions which go to the heart of a democracy.” After all, if sitting legislators are to be forbidden from taking tens of thousands of dollars under the table from the prime minister’s chief of staff in return for colluding in a scheme to suppress a matter of some embarrassment to the government, namely their own questionable expense claims, it will be impossible to get good people to go into public life.

*Duffy’s claim that he was threatened with the loss of his Senate seat appears to be at best a misunderstanding, especially given the strenuous efforts by senior Conservatives, well documented in the email chains, to assure themselves that no such outcome was likely. As indeed it was not: the constitutional requirement is only that a senator be “resident” in the province he represents; the location of his “principal residence” is relevant only for purposes of claiming the housing allowance.

                                              -----------------

So will Mike Duffy in the end get his sought after $8 million?...I would not bet against it, after all those types of results are all too frequent in our land of the squishy Left.

SEXLESS IN SEATTLE ...& EVERY WHERE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER.

In my ongoing series on how today we find  everything inside out, upside-down and backwards, I would like to focus on Sex... and in particular, the Male and Female Sex.

My Province has recently amended its Birth Certificates by deleting any reference to the sex of the baby.

And not only that, our Country has just announced that our Passports of the future too will make no reference to the sex of its holder...they're to be called gender neutral.

What in Hell is going on?

I listened to one of the 'enlightened' on t.v. the other day pontificate on how one really does not know what a child's sex is even after birth. Really?  She made this pronouncement without even a hint of a smile so I guess the woman was serious.

And I guess too that we will soon reach the point where we declare a new born baby to be an 'IT' .

This is simply another example of how the ditsy Left is changing Society to suit themselves without regard to Reality.

And I have to wonder what the Radical Feminists...they who are proud to be Female, will do when we will all be ITs. There will be no Males left to scapegoat and dump on.

I get the feeling and maybe you do too, that our Civilization, like the Romans before us, is in serious decline and I do not see any sign that it will be reversed.

Hopefully I am wrong but in the meantime will continue to point out these Society-Destroying Trends foisted upon a silent and gullible majority.

STEVE BANNON....WHO IS HE ?

I don't know !!

I must confess that I am not an inside pundit when it comes to American Politics...I am, after-all Canadian.

I do know the left-wing American media has branded him a Right-Wing Extremist but that only causes me to think they may be mistaken as they most always are.

And that in itself commits me to find out about Mr. Bannon to see what makes the guy tick and hopefully will be dealing with this in some detail in a future Blog.

In the meantime, what I can say in Bannon's favour is that if, as widely reported, he was instrumental in having President Trump distance America from the Paris Climate Accord, the guy cannot be all bad.

The other thing I can say is that to suggest Trump was propelled to power by right wing fanatics, is so much stuff and nonsense.  Assuming Right Wing Fanatics even voted, which I very much doubt they do, their numbers are totally insufficient to have made a difference in last November's Presidential Election.  Rather it was those Americans who are tired of Political Correctness and Entitlement Seeking Hangers-On who put Donald Trump in the White House and they are not going away irrespective of the vendetta launched by the Progressive Left to destroy The Donald.

And it is not that Donald Trump is without blame.  The truth is the guy is an abomination... his daughter would have been a preferred choice.  But the guy continues to get some things right.

For instance, in addition to renouncing the Paris Accord, President Trump has just recently Pardoned Sheriff Joe Arpaio, he who insisted his prisoners wear pink undies.  Bravo.

This past July,  Arpaio was found guilty of contempt of court for refusing to stop detaining people based on the suspicion that they were living in the United States illegally.  He was facing up to six months in prison.

So dear Reader let's get this straight:

Sheriff Joe, was convicted for stopping migrants to determine if they had entered his country illegally.  Given that the Arizona border has been an open sieve for the last 40 plus years would that not be his job?

And how could a Judge order him not to do what he legally is required to do? This could only happen in the United States where Cities and even States go out of their way to harbour illegals no matter how bad some of these dudes are.

So while we may agree that Trump is a buffoon... he continues to do things which I can fully support.

As I see it...
