JUSTIN TRUDEAU'S YEAR END REVIEW...A TWO PARTER.

At the beginning of this year I promised to do a Year-End Review in relation to the job Young Trudeau did throughout 2017.

Here is that review.

But first and just for the record, I also promised then not to deal with anything regarding YT or his Government over the course of 2017 for the simple reason that whatever they did / did not do... would matter a hoot in the scheme of World Affairs.

And for the most part I kept that promise finally breaking down in recent weeks in the face of mounting YT Stupidities.

I begin my year-end assessment with highly regarded columnist Andrew Coyne's year-end non-interview with the Young-guy:

I seem to have been passed over, once again, for one of those “exclusive” year-end interviews Prime Minister Trudeau gives to CTV, Global News, TVA etc. etc. But I am not one to let a little thing like that stop me. Herewith my own exclusive interview with the prime minister, minus the prime minister.

Prime Minister, thank you for this. Might I just start with the news of the day? With regard to your holidays on the Aga Khan’s private island in the Caribbean, you’ve been found by the ethics commissioner to have broken the conflict of interest law in four places. Yet you face no penalties of any kind. You’ve said the decision should give Canadians confidence in the process. Why?

You claim you accepted his hospitality because he was a “close family friend.” Yet the ethics commissioner found you hadn’t seen him in 30 years, but for a hug at your father’s funeral. She seems quite clear the Aga Khan’s interest in you had more to do with your official position and his dealings with the government you lead. If she could see that, why couldn’t you?

While we are on the subject of conflicts of interest, you’ve defended your finance minister, Bill Morneau, in the matter of his ownership, through a numbered company, of shares in his family’s pension management firm, which stood to benefit from changes to pension rules he introduced. Your defence is that he worked with the ethics commissioner and followed her advice. Why didn’t you?

The revelation that Morneau, rather than divest the shares as required, kept them inside a private corporation, where he would pay less tax on them, came just as your government was proposing to crack down on people who set up private corporations to avoid tax — though not in ways that would affect him. Or you, for that matter, notwithstanding your own use of private corporations. Did it not occur to you this might look a bit, I don’t know, two-faced? Or did you think no one would notice?

The opposition is demanding Morneau disclose what else he holds inside his numbered companies. Will he? Will you? More broadly, how does your affinity for private fundraisers with Chinese billionaires and private island holidays with other billionaires, not to say your own wealth, square with your professed devotion to the interests and concerns of the middle class?

Talking of billionaires, you’ve set great stock in developing a warm personal relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, notwithstanding your many political differences. You went so far as to participate in a photo-op showcasing the president’s commitment to women in business, even as he was accused of having sexually assaulted a number of women. A senior adviser, meanwhile, claimed to be kindred spirits with Steve Bannon. Leaving aside questions of taste, what is the evidence this campaign has paid off?

Negotiations on “updating” NAFTA seem to be going nowhere. What is your plan B in the event the talks collapse altogether? How does your failure to secure alternative trade arrangements, with either the Trans-Pacific Partnership or China, fit with that?

The China initiative foundered on your attempt to impose upon China the latest Liberal party orthodoxy in matters of gender rights and the environment. Yet you seem less concerned about China’s predations on our soil — greenlighting Chinese takeovers of Canadian firms without proper security reviews, even signalling a willingness to discuss an extradition treaty. Just what is your bottom line when it comes to trade with China?

The U.S. has just slashed its effective corporate tax rate almost in half, among other significant changes that experts say eliminates our competitive advantage. How will you respond? Is it time for fundamental tax reform?

If you had to do it all over, would you still have kicked those Liberal senators out of caucus?
With regard to defence, the platform promised two, mutually incompatible things: that you would hold an “open and transparent” competition to replace the fleet of CF-18 fighter jets, and that you would not choose the F-35. Which of those is still operative?

Cancelling a plan to buy Boeing planes as a temporary stopgap, you said you would not do business with companies that were “suing us,” by which you meant Boeing’s complaint before the U.S. International Trade Commission with regard to Bombardier’s C-Series passenger jet. How is the C-Series, now majority-owned by Airbus and to be assembled in Alabama, “us”?

The fall economic statement showed revenues for the current fiscal year at almost exactly the level projected in the Conservatives’ last budget. Yet instead of a small surplus, as the Conservatives had it, the government is running a deficit of roughly $20 billion. In the past you’ve blamed the Tories for the deficit, but it’s pretty clear now it’s your own work, isn’t it?

Your government has broken several important promises from the platform on which you campaigned in the past election, notably on electoral reform and balanced budgets. No doubt you will make new promises in the next election campaign. Why should Canadians believe you would be any more likely to keep them?
                                                               ...............................

Next... Part Two and His Broken Election Promises.

MECCA

The non-religious definition of which is as follows:

  • a place that attracts people of a particular group or with a particular interest

In that light, our country is a Mecca for Islamic Terrorists.

Non-Canadian Readers will find it hard to believe what I am about to tell you.

The going rate here in Canada for a confessed Islamic Terrorist is Ten Million Dollars.  This is what our country paid to Omar Khadr who confessed to killing an American Medic and Blinding one of his Comrades in a firefight in Afghanistan.

Why so you might well ask?

A Canadian Judge ruled that Canada marginally participated in an illegal interrogation of Khadr when he was a prisoner at Quantomino Bay in Cuba. It was enough though to warrant our Government to shower largess upon this Terrorist Killer.

Other similar big payouts have occurred here based upon equally suspect reasoning.

Too bad some of those windfalls did not reach the hands of those Allied Soldiers who were injured or to the families of those who lost love-ones at the hands of these inhuman jihadists.

But things are not getting better.  With the collapse of the ISIS Caliphate their fighters are like rats leave the sinking ship...so to speak and are returning to their native lands.

Including Canada.

Where we should be arresting them and keeping them from harming our citizenry, Canada welcomes them with open loving arms ...offering them rehabilitation and substantive living benefits.

But this does not surprise us Canadians since our soft on terrorists Prime Minister had the gall to chastise the previous Conservative Government for referring to Female Genital Mutilation as being a Barbarous Act...at that time he cold -heartily proclaimed that such language "did not convey responsible neutrality".

As you enter New York Harbour you find the Statute of Liberty which contains the famous quotation by Emma Lazarus:

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me."

The following could well be posted for the ISIS Returnees to Canada:

"Give us your ISIS baby killers, their rapists and their choppers off of heads, and we'll welcome them with open arms and most generous hospitality".

Only in Canada ....Pity.

IS CHINA A WORTHY FREE TRADE PARTNER ?

JUST INCLUDING THE NAME CHINA IN A HEADLINE ENSURES THAT THAT COUNTRY BECOMES A MAJOR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN FOR MY BLOG'S READERSHIP.

IT IS ALWAYS GOOD FOR MY NUMBERS WHICH RECENTLY SURPASSED 120,000.

NOW BACK TO TODAY'S TOPIC.

No Group of Seven Nation has entered into a Free Trade Agreement with China though our country's Leader, Young Justin Trudeau made an unsuccessful attempt to do so this past week.

In fact, YT was sent home packing by Chinese President Xi King-pin with his proverbial tail between his legs.

What did the Young-un do to attract such a negative reaction from Xi...why he insisted that if a Free Trade Agreement was to be agreed upon between Canada and China, a host of Human Rights Provisions would have to be included.

Trudeau was right to have tried to obtain an Agreement with China or with any other country for that matter since it leads to better products at cheaper prices and a general rise in employment in the Exporter and Importer Country alike.  This is especially vital to us since 85 % of our  Export Trade is with the United States and that country, under The Donald, is retreating into isolation.

So we here in Canada desperately need to branch out and seek other world markets.

So it defies logic that Trudeau would attempt to add matters related to Human Rights when he knew or ought to have known that his demands would doom any such Free Trade Agreement with China  to failure.  YT did the same thing earlier this year at the launch of Free Trade Renewal between Canada, the United States and Mexico and not surprisingly, those talks are going very poorly.

This Fall, he inexplicably snubbed the Trans Pacific Free Trade Negotiations.  He is making Trump look like a piker when it comes to seeking isolation for his country.

Maybe this is because Trudeau, like his father before him, has not one tittle of business acumen flowing through his progressive veins.

You and I know, as the world grows smaller, freer trade has been instrumental in raising millions out of poverty. I will not though belabour explaining further why Free Trade is so advantageous to exporter and importer alike.  Nor will I get into stating again what true Free Trade consists of, rather, I wish to focus the balance of this Blog on why it is wrong to burden Free Trade Talks with Human Rights Issues and the like.

Admittedly, there is no doubt that China is one of the most evil nations when it comes to abusing its citizenry rights and Trudeau received much criticism at home here for even trying to negotiate with such an evil entity.

But, if Canada and the other Group of Seven Members were to only trade with fellow Democratic Countries that honour the Rule of Law, they would be limited to a number less than 30 bearing in mind there are nearly 200 member countries in the United Nations.

The West has to keep in mind that when people are starving, the last thing they worry about are their Human Rights... Trade though provides the way and means to raise those peoples out of poverty.  Then and only then can they concern themselves with the Rights and Freedoms we here in the West take for granted.

And it is certainly working for China...

It is the world's number one exporter and in but a few years, their economy will be number one too, surpassing that of America's.

And estimates state that its Middle Class now exceeds the entire population of the United States and as it continues to grow, China  will be forced to jettison its totalitarian ways.

So for the benefit of all, more Trade... not less is the answer to greater Prosperity and for greater Protection of Rights and Freedoms. That is not to say, that we in the West need twiddle our thumbs awaiting Free Trade to work its magic.  Indeed, it is being complimented by a host of other means to get recalcitrant bad actors to give up their evil ways.

For instance, although the United Nations has taken much criticism in recent years for being ineffective, it is making progress in the promotion of Human Rights. And there are many other other World Forums dedicated to this as well including such NGOs as Amnesty International.

So back to our two Isolationists ...Trudeau and Trump and their race to the bottom.  Trump has an edge over us...the USA has the biggest domestic economy in the world.  Canada is tiny in comparison.  We'll hit bottom long before they do.

As I see it...

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO THANK....

DO YOU TOO NOTICE THAT WHENEVER TRAGEDY STRIKES THESE DAYS FROM THE MAYOR ON UP, THE SAME TIRED SHIBBOLETH'S ARE PARROTED, REGARDLESS THE CIRCUMSTANCES:

'I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THOSE BRAVE FIRST, SECOND, THIRD (AND SO ON), RESPONDERS' etc. etc.

Take the one that just occurred in New York City where the hapless Muslim Terrorist prematurely blew himself up.

Maybe all and sundry public officials should have led off by saying 'I would just like to thank the Terrorist for being an inept dolt when it comes to building pipe bombs'.

Or the Serial Killer in Tampa Florida who stupidly turned his gun over to a colleague in a Fast Food joint who then immediately took the gun to a police officer chowing down on doughnuts in her shop.

' I would just like to thank the brave McDonald's worker who, by turning her work colleague in, successfully put an end to the hunt for this totally deranged and indiscriminate killer'

Or back to New York and the recent murder of 8 cyclists by another Muslim Terrorist who was stopped when he drove his truck into an unsuspecting school bus.  So here we go...

'I would like to thank the Terrorist for being such a lousy driver and of course the driver of the school bus for being at the right place, at the right time'.

So just for the heck of it let's do a pretend scenario:

Setting- Mother and 3 year old Daughter are in their kitchen when the Mother notices that her daughter is about to touch a hot stove burner.

Mother acts quickly to block young Daughter's hand from being burned.

Word of this 'hits the streets' whereupon the following occurs.

Mayor - I would like to thank the first responders, including fire, ambulance, para meds and city police for their brave and rapid response in preventing what would likely have been a very tragic occurrence. Next,

Governor - I too would like to echo the Mayor's sagacious words but would be remiss if I did not especially single out the State Police, etc.  Next,

President - And don't for a minute forget the essential role played by the FBI, Homeland Security, the CIA and of course our dedicated and courageous Military.

Did you notice who is missing in all of this?

The Mum of course.

There is no political mileage to be made by promoting her.

As I see it...

HE'D HUFF AND HE'D PUFF AND HE'D BLOW HIS HOUSE DOWN...

THE HE IN THIS STORY IS NONE OTHER THAN DONALD TRUMP AND THE HOUSE OWNER IS NORTH KOREA'S RULER FOR LIFE KIM ...the YOUNG-UN.

And I guess from recent events, Young-un Kim's home must be made out of brick because for all Trump's huffing and puffing, his house is still standing.

When The Donald was on the campaign trail and even well into his Presidency, he was regularly quoted on what he was going to do the Young-un if he did not cease and desist from perfecting Nuclear Tipped ICBMs that could reach the United States.

Why he was going to tear the Young-un limb from limb...totally destroy his war making ability and that was just a start.

But as they say, that was then and this is now.  'Now' meaning North Korea has recently shown itself able to successfully launch such dreaded ICBMs.

So what does President Trump's latest threats to the Young-un consist of?  Why there are going to be more sanctions imposed on North Korea, more harsh resolutions emanating from the United Nations and most recently Trump has ....are you ready for this...added North Korea to the list of countries that sponsor terrorism.

I think you will no doubt agree with me that these new measures will likely cause Kimmie to collapse with spasms of paralytic inertia.

Or you just might say, if threats of bodily injury and death did not make a dent in his determination to acquire these dangerous weapons why would hollow threats about ineffective sanctions and resolutions and laughable sponsor lists have any greater effect?

And a good point you'd make.

Trump, if you can believe it, is even talking about more negotiations with China and with North Korea even though heretofore he rightly pointed out that such negotiations were worthless since they have been ineffective throughout past decades and several American Administrations of various stripes.

So what gives?

I am not sure but I do know that if North Korea is permitted to have nuclear weapons this will extend to Iran and a new nuclear armament race will be launched the likes of which we have never  seen before.

And I know something else as well.  If President Trump persists in this weak line of attack against North Korea, his credibility will be critically diminished.

As I see it...

Doesn't Trump Realize That This Will Jeopardize These Delicate Negotiations ?

The Delicate Negotiations I am of course referring to are the Negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians on the latter's right to Nationhood.

What was Trump thinking ?

At least that was the position taken by all 20+ attendees at our weekly discussion group yesterday morning ...save for one ...yours truly.

I kindly pointed out to all and sundry that there were no "Delicate Negotiations" underway..in fact, there were no Negotiations period and there have not been for a long time.

In that regard, the Palestinian situation is similar to North Korea where the charade of negotiations has played out by various US Administration with 'zip all' to show for it.

The bottom-line here is that if Arab nations really wanted the Palestinians to have their own Statehood, it would have happened years and years ago.  The cruel fact is that most Arab States want  to see things unsettled on Israel's border with Palestine.

The other fact in the mix is that Israel is the only Democratic Nation in the Middle East and it is time that they were allowed to get on with their lives including determining the location of their capital city.

President Trump made it official yesterday that the US would henceforth recognize Jerusalem to be their capital as per their wishes.

I see Trump's action as a step in the right direction which will hasten the Palestinian march to statehood.  I say that because when Palestine / and its other Arab neighbours see Israel moving on without them, they will realize that further stalling, foot-dragging will no longer be in their interests.

So back to our group.  I suspect much of their criticism of Trump yesterday was due to their overall dislike for the man and not so much with respect to his declaration regarding Jerusalem.  Indeed, I think this applies to much of the criticism surrounding Trump...it is knee-jerk reaction rather than thought out positions and policy.

As I see it...

BIG 'EXPLETIVE' DEAL

So said potty mouthed Joe Biden in a loud whisper to President Obama at a Press Conference to announce the passage of Obama's Health Care Legislation a few years back.

But today's 'Big Expletive Deal' pertains to the passage of Trump's Tax Reform Bill(s) in Congress.

The Democrats, to no ones surprise, dismisses this accomplishment by saying the legislation:

  • favours the rich
  • increases taxes on the middle class,
  • pampers Corporations and,
  • will add $ Trillions to the Debt.
But here is the truth.

1. The rich will benefit but only marginally.  And bear in mind the top 10% of America's income earners pay over 70% of all income taxes each year.  I'd say they are due for a modest break.

2.  The vast majority of middle income earners will see a sizable drop in the income taxes.  Only a small exception will see their taxes rise and that raise will be modest.  Again it is important to keep in mind that American's are not overtaxed to begin with...figures from 2015 show that their income taxes are but 26 % of America's GDP whereas the average for other developed countries hovers at around 34%.

3.  The US has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world ...at 35%.  In our own country Canada, for instance, the rate is but 15%.  The new Trump Tax Reform Legislation will reduce their rate to 22 and perhaps to even 20%.  This will give American Companies an important edge to better compete with an ever growing world economy. Americans of all stripes have been complaining bitterly about losing jobs off-shore, this will work to stop and even reverse that flow.   And,

4.  Finally the claim by the Progressives that the Debt will have to increase by at least 3 Trillion Dollars per year to account for lost tax revenue.  This is rather rich coming from the Left who in the last 8 years doubled the Debt from $10 Trillion to $20 Trillion.  The fact is, from previous experience, when income taxes were reduced, the debt did not increase, rather it decreased as more economic activity resulted in greater revenues for the Government. And this will happen this time as well to the chagrin of the Left.

So there you have it....a Big 'Expletive' Deal...and America has Trump and the Republicans to thank for it.

If this keeps up, The Donald may well be re-elected in 2020.  Maybe they will run Hillary against him..

As I see it...

GUESS I WAS WRONG ABOUT PRESIDENT TRUMP NOT COLLUDING WITH RUSSIA IN LAST YEAR'S ELECTION !

NOT !!

But boy would the Progressives out there like to hear people like me admit to such in light of this week's charges against Michael Flynn (Lt. Gen ret'd).

But dear reader, those charges have nothing ...zilch... to do with anyone seeking Russia's help to defeat Hillary in 2016. All they prove is that Flynn, like countless others in Washington, on all sides of the aisle, are lobbyist first and foremost trying and usually succeeding in filling their pockets with tons of other people's money. In fact, the biggest knock against the American Political System is that it is funded / controlled by Big Money.

And, as to the charges...hold your breath, they are for 'lying to the FBI', the same cops who continually lie to each other, to others in related security agencies and even to their politicians.  I classify these charges as Martha Stewart Charges since that was all they were able to pin on her.  It is all so pathetic.

And all the while, the only real proof of an Election Candidate seeking the help of Russians is with respect to dear Hillary.  And yet no investigation there.

It is nothing but a Witch Hunt ... or should I be politically incorrect and call it a Warlock Hunt in the case of The Donald?

As you know, from the very beginning I have called these assertions against Donald Trump to be wishful thinking on the part of the Dems.  They still are and will always continue to be so.

But there is something even more sinister happening here and it is not about either Donald Trump nor even Hillary Clinton since, in the scheme of things, they are merely bit players. Rather it is the Socialist Left's (a.k.a. the Democrats) fear of Parties of Capitalism, which, for the most part, the Republicans continue to be although even that is being tested in today's Progressive Climate.

They will stop at nothing to discredit Capitalism even though that is what made America great, has pulled the majority of the world's peoples out of poverty and despair and today is being employed most successfully by heretofore communist nations and their like.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, capitalism is the worst basis for economic development save for all the rest.

TWO REPORT CARD GRADES FOR PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP

"We know you like Trump, Galagher so let us guess whatever the subject matter is, you are going to give him As."

Well Dear Reader, you'd be half right:

Subject Matter One...Defence of the Free World.

In this important area the United States is truly back.  After 8 long years of apologies from Obama coupled with inaction in the face of aggression, Trump is bringing his country back to the delight of his allies and chagrin of America's enemies.

This is most evident in America's dealings with two of the world's out-of- control rogue States ....Iran and North Korea.  The former has threatened that once they have acquired the Nuclear Bomb they are going to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.  The latter, under the lunatic Young-Un, has threatened to reduce USA's major cities to rubble along with the death of millions of their citizens.

So here you are correct, I give the President a strong A.

Note: In order to keep this A at the end of coming Winter Term, President Trump will have to do more to de-denuclearize these two outliers.

Subject Matter Two...Free Trade:

Trump was elected on a platform that included Isolation for America especially when is comes to Trade and Commerce.

I never thought that he would actually stick with this nonsensical position since it is clear that Free Trade is a boon for Importing and Exporting Countries alike. (I won't get into the reasons for this but if you insist, will deal with that specifically in a future blog).

One of his first actions in office was to take America out of the Pacific Trade Agreement which includes the most influential and growing economies in the Far East.  Instead of looking to America for guidance, they will now look to China and the Chinese cannot believe their good fortune.

Trump is also threatening to deep six the North American Trade Agreement his country has with Canada and Mexico.  All three countries have benefited immensely under this agreement and all have seen a dramatic rise in jobs.

And you need look no further than Brexit to see the predicament the Brits have placed themselves in having to leave the European Union.

Bottom-line....Isolation does not work and to think this is being done on the brink of China replacing the United States as having the largest economy in the world.

So Dear Reader I give President Trump a solid F.

One final note, if Trump sticks to his approach in the above two areas ...Subject Matter Two will eventually erode the State's ability to deal effectively with Subject Matter One.

In other words, they simply will not have enough money to keep adequately funding Defence.

As I see it...

FIRST WORLD ISSUES (F.W.I.)

OUR FOREFATHERS CUT THEIR WAY INTO THE WILDERNESS TO EKE OUT A HAND-TO-MOUTH EXISTENCE.

They endured plague, war and depression and yet kept their human spirit.

Issues of the day included worrying about whether or not there would be enough food to eat, enough wood to burn, and whether they could escape the multitude of diseases for which there were no cure.

Men were men and women worked in lock-step beside them in true partnership against the elements.

As we enter nicely into this, the 21st Century, the Issues of today would have made our Forebears giddy with relief.

But there are consequences with these new preoccupations and it is up to each of us to determine whether they are good, bad or indifferent.  Or more to the point, whether those consequences are worth ??

First of all, the Individual's Rights and Freedoms are being replaced by Group Rights where Individual Groups are the ones being protected by law.

Governments continue to grow while Democracy rapidly declines;  the Courts make the law rather than the Legislatures while Special Interest Groups are catered to at the expense of the Majority.

Belief in God is being replaced by Environmental Worship especially when it comes to the related issues of Global Warming  and Climate Change. And as a consequence, Our Economic Health is being sacrificed to the delight of our competitors in South East Asia and beyond.

Marriage is no longer the preserve of a man and a woman and the terms male and female too are under strong attack.

We have become a throw-away Society and this has extended to the elimination of our most innocent and frail.

So you vote.  Are you okay or not okay with the direction that Society appears to be headed.

Yes or No?

And if No, what are you going to personally do about it.

IF NOT NOW... WHEN ?

Another Day...Another Mass Shooting.

The latest, yesterday's killing of nearly 30 parishioners in a small Texas town Baptist Church.

Indeed, on average, in the great United States of America, at least 1 mass killing occurs each and every day!

And the response from officials is always the same:

  • We will not be cowed, we will not change our way of life etc. etc. etc,
  • This will bring us all together,
  • And this, 'in the face of these atrocities we now more than ever need to be packing'; and, of course,
  • Thanks to our brave First Responders ...a, b, c, d, e and so on. and then my favourite...,
  • Now is not the time to talk about Gun Control.
In essence, Freedom Reigns along with our Constitutionally Guaranteed Right to Bear Arms.

Excuse me while I suppress a yawn.

Now some more grime stats:

      • Each year approximately 34,000 Americans are killed by guns.  This is equivalent to the number that die annually in car crashes;
      • An equal number are injured as a result of guns; and,
      • The USA's homicide by guns rate is 25 x greater than the combined rates of 22 high income sister nations.
Now as many of you know, I seldom agreed with former President Obama or his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but this is one important area where I strongly agree with both of them.

Simply Stated...The time has come to get rid of all firearms.

Will it happen?

Yes, but not in my lifetime, nor even during my children's time, but hopefully it will occur during their children's time here on earth.

It has to and it will.

But think of the wasted slaughter in the meantime.

So yes, Dear Reader, now is the time to talk Gun Control / Elimination

As I see it...

OXYCODONE....SOMETHING DOES NEED TO BE DONE.

BUT IT DOES NOT ENTAIL ASSISTING USERS IN 'SHOOTING UP' WHICH APPEARS TO BE THE TREATMENT DU JOUR.

EACH YEAR DEATHS FROM OXY OVERDOSES MIRROR THE NUMBER OF DEATHS FROM CAR ACCIDENTS...i.e. 35,000.

PRESIDENT TRUMP CAME OUT THIS MONTH TO DECLARE THESE OVERDOSES A NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY WHICH MANY HAVE CRITICIZED SINCE, IN THEIR OPINION, HE DID NOT GO FAR ENOUGH.  THEY SAY HE SHOULD HAVE DECLARED A NATIONAL EMERGENCY  WHICH WOULD HAVE FREED UP MORE FEDERAL CASH TO FIGHT THIS SCOURGE.

In this, I side with President Trump in his more cautious approach since I fear that the United States may well fall into the trap we here in Canada have.  We have attacked the process and not the cause / effect.

Canada has established numerous Safe Shoot-up Sites in the noble but totally useless attempt to reduce the number of deaths.

Users are given clean needles to use in their desperate attempt to feed their habit and should the shoot-up result in an overdose, health professionals are there to bring them back to the living.

It Simply Does Not Work and Permit Me to Explain Why:

First of all, it engages the State in an illegal activity;

Second, it may save some lives temporarily i.e. those who overdose on site, it does not though protect these unfortunate souls 24 hours per day, seven days a week;

Third, it does not usurp the influence of the Pushers rather it does the opposite since by cloaking the process with a false sense of safety, it encourage even greater usage;

Fourth, in conjunction with 3, it does nothing to reduce crime associated with users desperately trying to get the money needed to fund their dangerous habit; and,

Fifth and most importantly, these Pop-up Sites do absolutely nothing to get these unfortunates off their addiction.

So drop the Useless Pop-up Injection Sites and replace them with Treatment / Counselling Sites where addicts can receive the help they need including access to legal, less addictive drugs in a active treatment environment designed to actively wean them off.

And couple that with a Concerted Public Education Program for both Schools and the General Public alike warning of the grave dangers attached to the misuse of Oxycodone.

As I see it...

WHAT A HORRID WOMAN....HILLARY.

FOR WELL OVER A YEAR NOW DEAR HILLARY HAS BEEN BITTERLY COMPLAINING ABOUT THE RUSSIANS HAVING CONSPIRED WITH DONALD TRUMP  TO STEAL LAST NOVEMBER'S ELECTION FROM HER.

AND NOW IT TURNS OUT THAT IT WAS HILLARY HERSELF WHO WAS PAYING THE RUSSIANS BIG SUMS FOR MALICIOUS AND TOTALLY FALSE GOSSIP ABOUT TRUMP.

IT TAKES SOME GALL TO DO THAT BUT AS MOST OF US HAVE COME TO REALIZE, HILLARY HAS THAT IN SPADES.  THAT SAID, EVEN I DID NOT INITIALLY THINK THAT HILLARY OR HER CAMPAIGN WERE CAPABLE OF SUCH SUBTERFUGE.

IT SIMPLY DEFIES LOGIC...SHE WAS FULLY WILLING TO DESTROY A PERSON'S CHARACTER IN HER ABSOLUTE LUST FOR POWER.

I WON'T GET INTO THE MYRIAD OF HER OTHER FAILURES, SINCE THAT WOULD KEEP YOU FAR TOO LONG, BUT THIS ONE FACT ALONE SUFFICES TO IRREFUTABLY BRAND THE DEAR WOMAN A LIAR AND A CHEAT OF HERCULEAN PROPORTIONS.

I DO NOT THOUGH WANT TO SEE HER GO TO JAIL...TOO MUCH WATER HAS GONE UNDER THE BRIDGE AND I EXPECT THAT HILLARY WILL NOW BE SMART ENOUGH TO SIMPLY FAD INTO THE WOODWORK AND HOPEFULLY TAKE 'SLICK WILLIE' ALONG WITH HER.

I would though expect the current Special Prosecutor's Investigation into the Trump's Campaign ties with Russia to now refocus its efforts toward what the previous Democratic Administration was doing since it appears there was much suspect stuff happening over the course of the previous 8 years.

As I write this Blog there are reports of the first charges being laid by the Prosecutor's Office and I suspect that those charge(s) will pertain to one of more of persons with connection to the Trump Campaign.

I do not believe for a second that those charge(s) will have any real connection to Donald Trump and I have believed this from the very beginning.  In fact, the Investigation began at the behest of Hillary and her folks and if she had told the truth back then - ie that it was her who was paying the Russians for sensational dirt, the investigation would never have gotten off the ground.

So stay tuned Dear Reader and we will see together how ludicrous these coming Trumped Up Charges really are.

OKAY GALAGHER, IF NOT THE GRITS NOR THE TORIES ...WHAT THEN?

Before I disclose which Party I would be prepared to support, permit me to review for a minute just how I see myself...politically speaking that is.

Surprise, surprise...I view myself as a 'Real Conservative', that is to say both a Fiscal Conservative as well as a Social Conservative.  Each complement the other and those that consider themselves to be one and not the other are simply letting the Team down.

To cut to the chase, I believe in small governments with no debt nor deficit and I believe in the core family...wife, husband and children as being the corner stone of society...always has been and always will be.

In Canada though the Conservative Party at both the Federal Level and the Ontario Level (our largest province) are merely Liberal Lites.  And it could easily be argued that it would be better to vote for the Real Liberals rather than for the Conservative Pretenders.

And in that regard, I have always believed that it is much better to lose than it is to deny one's principles and win for the sole sake of winning.

And further, I believe our country has in recent times gone down the Progressive Road simply because Real Conservatives have consistently dropped the ball by opting for the convenient over promoting and defending what they earnestly believe is the right thing to do.

When this occurs, two things happen, the Conservatives abandon their core principles and in so doing, deny the electorate a viable and most needed alternative.

Two examples:

First, in regard to the Fiscal Conservatives...Green Energy not only does it waste tons of taxpayers' money, it handcuffs business in its ability to compete with world.  And the sad truth is,our misguided efforts are ineffective in preventing or even stalling climate change one iota.

Second, in regard to Social Conservatives...Canada ranks with only a few other countries, most notably China and Russia in not having any restrictions on abortion.  In these select (?) countries, abortion can and does take place right up to the time of birth.  And contrary to popular opinion, Polling shows when this is pointed out to Canadians, the vast majority are aghast and favour realistic restrictions like those in place in the majority of the World's Humanitarian Nations.

Simply stated, Canada is in desperate need of a Real Conservative Party.  One that can be considered home by Social and Fiscal Conservatives alike.

Sadly no such Party currently exists.

And until that time arrives, I will be parking my vote with the Libertarian Party of Canada.  At least that Party has core values that do not fluctuate with the wind.

As I see It...

I SIMPLY CANNOT VOTE FOR THAT PARTY !!

The Ontario Liberals have been in power since 2003...now going on 15 years and during their tenure have turned our once great Province into 'Have-not status'...once the Economic Engine of Canada, Ontario now is its Caboose, pretending for a moment that this relic of railroad history still exists.

It is not surprising then that 15 years ago, Ontario had North America's cheapest Hydro-Electric Rates, today those rates, thanks to the Liberal's Green Energy Fiasco, are the Continent's most expensive, all the while thousands upon thousands of manufacturing jobs have gone missing in action.  Who'd a thunk so much damage could be sustained in such a relatively short period of time?

The only sector to grow and flourish during their decade and a half in power is the public sector....police, fire, teachers, nurses, along with armies of other bureaucrats and government officials.  Public Service Unions, once the champions of coal miners, factory workers now shill for those on the public purse...the ones with best salaries, best pensions, best working conditions and best job security.  Their Unions have become so rich and powerful that they are the ones largely responsible for keeping the Liberals in power for these past decade and a half.

This may or may not be coming to an end since next year, June 7, 2018 to be exact, will see a General Election held here in our Province.

And with this in mind, I would like to itemize a number of specific policy initiatives that I simply will not be able to vote for:

Sex Education as early as grade 3;

A  32% increase in the Minimum Wage;

Carbon Tax and/ or any versions of the same;

Allowing Unrestricted Abortion up to and including the time of birth;

Removal of an Individual's Sex on the Provincial Birth Certificates;

Riding Nomination Meetings manipulated by HQ.

So Dear Reader, I am not going to Vote For That Party.  Full Stop.

"But Galagher, as a Life Long Conservative, you were not likely to have voted Liberal in any event".

Who said anything about voting Liberal?  The above policies are certainly those of the ruling Liberal Government but they have all been adopted holus-bolus by the Opposition Progressive Conservative Party.

"So which Party will you vote for Galagher?"

Good Question, ... More on that in my next Blog.

OFF ON SABBATICAL

I HAVE DECIDED TO 'GO OFF ON SABBATICAL' IF FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN THE NEED TO RECHARGE MY BATTERIES.

JUST FOR THE RECORD, SINCE BEGINNING MY BLOGGING SEVERAL YEARS BACK, THE SITE HAS HAD A TOTAL OF 111,718 'PAGE VIEWS' AND I HAVE PUBLISHED 728 BLOGS, PLUS THIS ONE TODAY.

AND AS A REMINDER, MY PRIMARY AUDIENCE ARE MY THREE ADULT CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES.

MY HOPE IS THAT SOME DAY THEY WILL READ OVER MY BLOGS TO REKINDLE THE PATH LESS WALKED WHICH I HAVE ENJOYED TAKING IN LIFE AND HOPEFULLY WILL CONTINUE TO ENJOY FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

IN THAT REGARD, IT IS MY HOPE TOO THAT ALTHOUGH I AM OFTEN (FREQUENTLY?) WRONG IN WHAT I HAVE TO SAY, IT WILL GIVE THEM AND HOPEFULLY YOU PAUSE TO CONSIDER LESS HEARD OPINIONS...ONES THAT ARE NOT SO LIKELY TO BE EXPRESSED IN THE DAY'S MEDIA.

MY GOAL IS TO HELP EDUCATE SINCE AN UNEDUCATED PERSON READS THE NEWS AND ACCEPTS IT AT FACE VALUE WHEREAS AN EDUCATED PERSON'S REACTION TO SOME NEW 'FACT OR OPINION' IS TO SAY "THAT'S INTERESTING...I NEED TO LOOK INTO THAT FURTHER".

CONTINUE TO BE A DOUBTING THOMAS.

FINALLY, ONE AREA THAT I HAVE DRIFTED AWAY FROM IN RECENT BLOGS IS MY BELIEF OUR SOCIETIES STARTING GOING OFF THE RAILS IN THE EARLY 1960s.   I AM IN MY 60s AND AM TOLD THAT MOST PEOPLE MY AGE LOOK BACK ON THEIR CHILDHOOD AND SAY...'BOY THOSE WERE THE DAYS, KIDS TODAY ARE LAZY NE'ER-DO-WELLS etc. etc'.

I QUITE LIKE THE 'KIDS OF TODAY' AND BELIEVE THE MAJORITY OF THEM TO BE NICE,HARDWORKING INDIVIDUALS...THIS DESPITE THAT WE BABY BOOMERS HAVE LEFT THEM IN A MESS.

BEFORE I SIGN-OFF THOUGH...TWO PREDICTIONS:

FIRST, DESPITE A COMFORTABLE LEAD IN THE POLLS, I BELIEVE ANGELA MERKEL WILL LOSE GERMANY'S GENERAL ELECTION TO BE HELD LATER THIS MONTH.

MY SECOND PREDICTION IS THAT NORTH KOREA'S YUNG-UN WILL BE DEAD BY CHRISTMAS AND THUS IN THE COMPANY OF HIS DECEASED UNCLE AND HALF BROTHER.

ANOTHER DAY... ANOTHER LONDON SUBWAY BOMBING.

YESTERDAY SAW 29 BRITONS INJURED WHEN A BOMB WENT OFF IN THE LONDON SUBWAY.  FORTUNATELY, UNLIKE PREVIOUS TIMES, NO ONE WAS KILLED BUT THAT WAS DUE MORE TO GOOD FORTUNE SINCE THE BOMB ONLY PARTIALLY EXPLODED.  NONETHELESS, IN ADDITION TO THE INJURED, HUNDREDS WERE SCARED OUT OF THEIR WITS AS THEY TRIED TO FLEE FROM THE UNDERGROUND.

The one big problem remains is that no one seems to know who is behind these atrocities.

That said, London's Mayor, who is Muslim, was quick to label the attack as a "Terrorist" Attack.

The British Prime Minister quickly followed by narrowing down the list of suspects calling the Attack as one committed by "Cowardly Terrorists" and US President Donald Trump, usually one not to be afraid to call a spade a shovel, pronounced the bombing as the evil doings of "A Loser Terrorist".

So now we know ...the animal(s) behind yesterday's bombing is a 'Cowardly, Loser, Terrorist'.

Indeed British Authorities are asking its citizens to be on the lookout for these self-same creeps.

But just in case the Mayor's/Prime Minister's/President's descriptions of these evil doers falls short, I ...Dear Reader...am here to help out.

I think I know who is behind all of this....why it is Al Right Nazis. If, like me, you read the papers and watch the news you will know that everything that is wrong today is due to these reprehensible skin heads.

So if I was to advise a British Citizen on who to look out for, I would tell him or her to pay special attention to those giving the Heil Hitler Salute and brandishing a Tattoo on their upper shoulder with the numbers 88.

"But Galagher we are not aware of any Terrorist Attacks that have been committed by Neo-Nazis."

Good Point.

Oh and this just in...ISIS has just taken responsibility for  yesterday's Bombing.

Aren't they some sort of Islamic Extremists?

Who'd a Thunk?

Ottawa Has Enough Money For A New Taj Mahal-Like Main Library ...

Well Truth Be Known, Our Country Canada Has Oodles Of Money For Whatever Comes Down The Pike....We are so blessed.  Even if that blessing does not extend to our Children and our Children's Children.

Since it is not like we pay our way, heck Canada and its 10 Provinces have accumulated the highest debt in our country's young history... some $1.5 Trillion Dollars or approx. $40,000 per man, woman and child.

Not bad for a Country with a population of only 35 million.

And that dear reader does not include the various pension shortfalls!

Galagher we thought today's Blog was about Ottawa's Main Library?

Oh right - I was simply setting the stage for why we in Canada continue to dig ourselves further and further into debt, and am using the construction of the Taj Mahal Library as an example of a needless expenditure.  Indeed, such edifices are a relic of the last century but plans continue to build one in downtown Ottawa.  The last estimate I could find was just shy of $170 Million which you and I know will exceed well over $200 Million by the time shovels break ground.

True many Baby Boomers still rely on hard-copy books but those coming after, have transferred en mass to electronic versions.  But for us Baby Boomers there is still a workable Library Infrastructure in place - why Ottawa alone has well in excess of 30 Branch Libraries.  They too can be expected to downsize and eventually disappear as the last of us Boomers go one to our rewards.

So why then the Taj Mahal...other than for the fact that money is never an object when it comes to government spending.

The best explanation was given by the City Councillor in charge of Libraries who readily admitted on radio that it was not needed for books anymore as they are becoming more and more passe.  Rather, it was because other major cities have Taj-Mahal like edifices housing their Central Libraries.  I guess that is the 'keeping up with the Jones argument'.  The other reason he gave was the need for such a building to accommodate the needs of refugees and immigrants...a meeting place if you like.  Silly me, I had thought that was one of the main purposes for Community Halls.

On the radio today a big discussion took place around another growing use for Libraries and that pertains to freely accessing porn...even young children are not prevented from viewing it.  It used to be the neighbourhood pervert skulked around to do his nefarious deeds, now he can go to the nearest Library and work his ill as a respected patron.  Unbelievable but True.  And you and I are paying for it.

So in the future when you see more money spent on initiatives such as the Paris Accord or on Green Energy fiascoes, think about our spanking new but totally unneeded Central Library.

And speaking of wasting money.

On the front page of one of Canada's national newspapers today is an article about a small tribe in Southern Ontario population 368... spending $546,000 Canadian Tax Dollars on a Pow Wow.  Included in the article was reference to the Chief contracting to have her son video the event in return for $190,000.  Not a bad pay day even for our Governments' low standards.

But I have to think that if I was native and had to sit through a Pow Wow I'd want ample liquid refreshment close at hand too.

As I see it...

GUILTY AS CHARGED.

NOT BLOODY LIKELY.

OUR ESTEEMED PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT, THE PROVINCE'S WORST IN OUR 150 YEAR HISTORY, FINDS ITSELF IN COURT THIS WEEK AND NEXT ...IN FACT IN TWO SEPARATE COURTS... AS DEFENDANTS.

NEXT WEEK WILL SEE SENIOR FOLKS IN THE PREMIER'S OFFICE FACING CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR DESTROYING SENSITIVE EMAILS. I KNOW, I KNOW 'WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL, ISN'T THAT WHAT DEAR HILLARY DID WITH IMPUNITY?'

BUT MORE ON THAT CASE LATER, TODAY I WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON THE CASE THAT BEGAN EARLIER THIS WEEK WHERE THE PREMIER'S FORMER DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF, PAT SORBARA, PLUS ANOTHER SENIOR PARTY OFFICIAL, ARE ACCUSED OF BRIBERY UNDER THE ELECTIONS ACT:

The Act's Bribery Section states that 'no person shall directly or indirectly give, procure or promise or agree to procure an office or employment to induce a person to become a candidate, refrain from becoming a candidate or withdraw his or her candidacy.'

'A conviction carries a penalty of up to $5,000 but if a judge finds it was broken "knowingly," the penalty is a fine of up to $25,000 and/or up to two years less a day in jail.'

HERE BRIEFLY ARE THE RELEVANT FACTS:

In the last general provincial election the Liberal Candidate, Andrew Olivier lost the Sudbury Riding to a Socialist Party Rival by a tad less than a thousand votes.  Up till then, the Liberals had held that seat for approx. 20 years.  In a bizarre move, the victorious socialist unexpectedly quit 5 months into his new gig citing the usual health and family reasons thereby opening the riding up for a by-election that Olivier naturally hoped he'd win.

It soon though was made clear to Olivier that the Premier did not want him to run again and that they had another in mind to carry the Party's Banner.

But it was still left open that a nomination meeting might take place and Olivier naturally still harboured hope that he might eventually win out.

It was at this point that Sorbara et al offered jobs/positions to Olivier on condition that he walk silently away into the night. Olivier was astute enough to have taped these offers.

This would accomplish two things, it would clear the way for the Premier's favourite and it would help heal any expected split with the Olivier supporters in the Riding should their guy be callously cast aside.

                                          ----------------

Seems like an open and shut case of Bribery to me...remember the words of the section:  No person shall directly or indirectly give, procure or promise or agree to procure an office or employment to induce a person to become a candidate, refrain from becoming a candidate ...

And although the Premier has the power to hand-pick her candidate, she did not officially make that decision and until she did, any Riding Liberal - including Olivier could still expect to compete.  In fact, in his own testimony this week that is exactly what he testified to...that is to say, he was 'still hoping that the Premier would not designate her favourite and that he (Olivier) would still be given an opportunity to run'.

The defendants lawyers ...no fools they argued that Olivier was never a candidate for the Byelection and that even Oliver knew that it was never likely he'd be given the Premier's preference.

I would not be the least surprised if the Court buys this defence since it certainly defied belief when it found The Duffy not guilty on over 30 criminal charges. See my recent Blog.

So you play Judge here, what would you decide???

As a post-script, as a long time politico I know full well that these types of negotiations go on as unseemly as it may seem to many of you.  What makes this case different is the fact that Andrew Olivier had the presence of mind to tape his conversations with the two defendants.

With the wide usage of IPHONES one can expect future such discussions will be much more cautiously delivered.

WE HAVE DECIDED TO SELL OUR CONDO

Condo living is all the rage of late and Anne and I got caught up in this growing trend but we kept our 1 1/2 Story Bungalow. So with 2 properties to manage ...double realty taxes, repairs and insurance and such it has gotten just too much for us so we have reluctantly but nonetheless quickly come to the conclusion that we best sell our beloved Condo.

It's a good size for a Condo - 1650 sq ft and is ground level so it has its own gardens, patio etc.  It also has new appliances, mostly new furnishings, as well as a year old heating and air-conditioning system.  We'll miss it but it will be a super buy for you since we are motivated.

If you get the chance, please drive by it and if you like it, be sure to quickly give us a call.

Hold on a minute, I have a call coming in:

"Boy your condo sounds great before we talk price the Mrs. and I would like to take a drive by it...Where exactly is it Galagher?"

Good question, 'Using the Sarasota / Bradenton Florida Airport as your reference point, drive 11.5 miles north toward Bradenton and turn left at ...'

'Hello, Hello, ...I guess he hung up'.

Any way don't you waste any time getting there it is not likely to last.

THE PENNY DROPPED.

Which is now somewhat ironic since our country Canada no longer mints the tiny coin.

But back to the Dropped Penny analogy.

Canada is a member of NATO but we are hardly a member in good standing since we contribute less than half of our annual allotment (less than 1% of GDP compared to the required 2%). Thus it is not surprising that our equipment for all our branches of the military are quickly becoming outdated.  For instance, we are still flying the woefully outdated Sea King Helicopters which past their best before date in the early 1980s.

But my story today involves our outdated CF18 Jet Fighters that date back to the 1970s and which too are in desperate need of replacement. NATO favours replacement by Lockheed Martin's F35 Joint Striker Jet and NATO countries, save for Canada, are following suit since military experts say the Joint Striker Jet is far superior to its competitors and due to the fact that it is critical for NATO pilots to operate from a comparable platform.

So what is Canada going alone on and more to the point ..why?

Canada has decided to purchase between 25 and 30 Boeing F/A Super Hornets and is calling it an 'interim step' to give it more time to consider a permanent solution.

But our country has never adequately answered the Why in all of this.  Why purchase up to 30 jets, at a cost of over $2 Billion Dollars, even as an interim step, when it is not recommended by NATO?

It never made any sense to me until just the other day...when the proverbial penny fell.  I was reading an article that Boeing, the manufacturer of the Super Hornet, is in the process of bringing a trade dispute against Bombardier, Canada's golden hair Quebec Manufacturer of civilian aircraft and railway transportation products.

Boeing was bringing action against Bombardier for unfair and aggressive trade practices and in particular for 'dumping' passenger jets in the United States below cost.

Canada's Prime Minister, the one and only Justin Trudeau, struck back saying that in light of Boeing's action, "Canada is reviewing current military procurement that relates to Boeing".  In other words, Trudeau was threatening to withdraw from the agreement to purchase Boeing's Super Hornets.

Could this be the answer why Canada was entering into its interim step to purchase Boeing's Jets in the first place?

Moreover does it have something to do with Bombardier consistently coming out on top when it comes corporate welfare payments from Canada's Federal Government and from its home province of Quebec?

Indeed, over the years billions of taxpayers' money have been spent to support this poorly managed entity.  Earlier this year the Feds provided the company with and interest free loan in the sum of $283 million which followed a $1 Billion Dollar Bailout from the Province of Quebec.

It appears that no cost is too great to support Bombardier, and I leave it to you to determine if that also includes the purchase of a bunch of unneeded Jets.

As I see it...

LIKE THE UNITED STATES, CANADA HAS A SENATE...

UNLIKE THE UNITED STATES, CANADA'S SENATE IS AN UN-ELECTED, UNACCOUNTABLE BODY FILLED WITH HACKS, FLACKS AND NE'ER DO WELLS.

OUR SENATE IS THE ENVY OF SUCH STERLING TOTALITARIAN COUNTRIES AS RED CHINA.

AND TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, OUR SENATE HAS EVEN MORE SENATORS (105) THAN DOES THE U.S. SENATE (100) DESPITE THE FACT THAT OUR COUNTRY IS BUT 10% OF ITS SIZE.

OKAY GALAGHER...'SO JUST HOW BAD IS YOUR SENATE?'

GLAD YOU ASKED.

AND TO DO THAT, WE'LL LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE CASE OF THE MOST RECENT HONOURABLE SENATOR TO FIND HIMSELF ON THE FRONT PAGES OF THE NEWS...

MICHAEL DENNIS DUFFY KNOWN TO ALL AND SUNDRY SIMPLY AS 'DUFFY'.

In his maiden Senate Speech he began by saying he had not sought the honour of being named a Canadian Senator ...rather it had been thrust upon him.  This despite the fact that everyone who knows
Duffy knew that he had lobbied long and hard for this appointment for over many decades.  As an aside, He would have made an excellent politician given my belief that you can believe whatever a politician tells you up to the time their lips begin to move.

Duffy did not waste any time making a name for himself by quickly becoming the subject of 31 Criminal Charges for Bribery, Fraud and Breach of Trust all related to his new role as a Canadian Senator.  Eventually and in my opinion amazingly, he was found not guilty on all charges though it is widely held that his actions were deemed to be those of a totally morally bankrupt individual.

He was able to return to his cushy sinecure and reimbursed retroactively for his pay and benefits.

(Below you will find an article by one of Canada's best Columnists, Andrew Coyne who expertly and better than me sets out for you, in some detail, the shenanigans The Duffy was up to in the lead up to his 31 Criminal Charges:

Andrew Coyne:

What is $8 million, after all when one considers the 'cruel and unusual punishment' to which, according to his statement of claim, Duffy was subjected.

“If this action succeeds in bringing Charter protections to all who work on Parliament Hill, this will be my greatest contribution to public life.”
— Senator Mike Duffy

Well I think we can all agree on that. And let there be no doubt: in suing the Senate of Canada and the Attorney General of Canada for $6.5 million in general damages, $1 million in punitive damages, and $300,000 in lost income, in addition to unspecified amounts in special damages, interest, and costs, the Senator from Wherever I Designate is not fighting for yet another great wad of dough from the taxpayer, in compensation for having been deprived of great wads of dough from the taxpayer when the Senate suspended him for taking great wads of dough from the taxpayer.

No, he is fighting for you and me. Well, you and me, if we were appointed to the Senate of Canada. After his spectacular 2016 acquittal on charges of fraud, bribery and breach of trust, he is fighting for the rights we all enjoy: the right to be presumed innocent by a credulous judge, the right to a strangely inert Crown prosecutor (who failed to ask him, among other omissions, about the famous $90,000 cheque from Nigel Wright), and most of all, the right to claim tens of thousands from the public purse for personal trainers, “emergency” makeup artists, and travel of all kinds — notably “travel” to the Ottawa house he had lived in for 38 years — on the grounds that the rules did not specifically prohibit it.

Sure, the “experts” say his chances are slim. Sure, the road ahead seems long and hard. But if it saves even one life appointee …

What is $8 million, after all — roughly 80 per cent of what Omar Khadr (my italics - A convicted Islamic Terrorist) received for being imprisoned as a teenager and tortured for days on end — when one considers the “cruel and unusual punishment” to which, according to his statement of claim, Duffy was subjected, not to mention the deprivation of his right to “life, liberty and security of the person.” In case there is any confusion: both are references not to imprisonment or torture, but to the Senate decision to suspend him without pay he made as a senator. Well, he did, repeatedly, under both Liberal and Conservative governments, but the point remains: there but for a sense of shame go all of us. Each day as he takes his seat in the Senate he must relive the moment he was temporarily deprived of this basic right of citizenship, a six-figure sinecure until the age of 75, so long sought and so hard won. Not to mention the cost to his reputation, unblemished until then by even a hint of propriety.

And what is even that trauma compared to what he endured earlier, behind the scenes: blackmailed into accepting the $90,000, with the threat that if he did not take the money he had repeatedly demanded he would not get it.* For months he was obliged to remain silent while the most senior figures in the Conservative government furiously attempted to whiten his good name: rewriting a Senate committee report, attempting to tamper with an outside audit, pretending to the public that Duffy had repaid his expenses himself, all with a view to avoiding any suggestion that he had knowingly done wrong. To this day he must live with the stigma of being forced to publicly acknowledge he “may have made a mistake” in claiming his unwinterized cottage in PEI as his principal residence, though to date he has been spared the stigma of having to repay any of it.
This is a moment for all Canadians to reflect. What has happened to us? What have we become that we should so cruelly mistreat this dedicated public servant? Not since Brian Mulroney was forced to pay taxes years late on the $300,000 in cash he had secretly taken from an international arms dealer and lied about under oath has there been such a travesty of justice.

As Duffy says, this is not about Duffy. Rather, it raises “questions which go to the heart of a democracy.” After all, if sitting legislators are to be forbidden from taking tens of thousands of dollars under the table from the prime minister’s chief of staff in return for colluding in a scheme to suppress a matter of some embarrassment to the government, namely their own questionable expense claims, it will be impossible to get good people to go into public life.

*Duffy’s claim that he was threatened with the loss of his Senate seat appears to be at best a misunderstanding, especially given the strenuous efforts by senior Conservatives, well documented in the email chains, to assure themselves that no such outcome was likely. As indeed it was not: the constitutional requirement is only that a senator be “resident” in the province he represents; the location of his “principal residence” is relevant only for purposes of claiming the housing allowance.

                                              -----------------

So will Mike Duffy in the end get his sought after $8 million?...I would not bet against it, after all those types of results are all too frequent in our land of the squishy Left.

As I see it...
